Eyelashes Growth Explained
Eyelashes have three stages of growth: active growth, transitional and resting. This cycle takes four to eleven months to complete.
Anagen (Active Growth) Phase
Eyelashes in this phase, which lasts 4 to 10 weeks, grow between 0.12 and 0.14 mm per day. The longer this phase, the longer the lashes will grow.
Catagen (Transitional) Phase
During this phase, the hair follicles shrink, the eyelash stops growing, and detaches from the blood source.
Lashes maintain the length gained from the Anagen phase while waiting for the next phase. This stage usually lasts for 2 to 3 weeks.
If an eyelash falls or is pulled out, its follicle remains empty until it completes the transition phase and enters the Telogen phase.
This results in empty spots in your lashes until the hair follicles enter the Anagen phase again.
Telogen (Resting Or Shedding) Phase
In this phase, lashes remain inactive and rest while the new lashes begin to grow inside the hair follicles, and the old lashes fall out naturally.
This phase lasts for about 3 to 4 months, after which the eyelashes fall out, and the growth cycle begins again.
Around 50% of the eyelashes1 are in this phase at any given time.
When using products for lashes growth, it depends on the product and the phase it is used in. That’s why you have to be extra careful when choosing the right one for you if you want to see results.
Can Oils Help Boost Lash Growth?
If you’ve already tried growing your lashes you know it can be a difficult and challenging process which requires patience.
There are many products out there that claim to help with eyelash growth, but a considerable number of them fail to give any effect, leaving you disappointed and feeling like you’ve wasted your money.

Another study found that combining three oils, commonly referred to as the “holy trinity” (castor oil, rosemary oil, and avocado oil), helped to make lashes grow thicker and stronger.
Of course more research is needed, but it’s clear that oils really encourage longer and healthier lashes.

What Helps Eyelashes Grow? – 7 Natural Oils & Vitamins
You may have already searched about home remedies, vitamins and oils to make your lashes grow.
But, do these methods always produce desired results, and which one is the best?
One thing’s for sure: choosing natural options is always safer, more effective and more affordable for sure.
To naturally nourish and strengthen your eyelashes, there are a few oils that can work wonders.
In addition there are certain ingredients, such as vitamins and fatty acids that boost lash growth making the eyelashes darker, longer and healthier.
To save your time and money, I’m going to explain what to use and what to avoid when it comes your lash care.
Based on scientific research and personal experiences of many women, here are some of the best oils to help lashes grow:
1. Coconut Oil
One of the top oils for stimulating lash growth is coconut oil3 due to its rich content of nutrients, minerals and vitamins that help in promoting the health and growth of eyelashes. It moisturizes the lashes, making them longer, thicker, visibly soft and shiny.
Coconut oil’s fatty acids possess antibacterial and antifungal properties4 that fight against lash loss and infections which may limit their growth.
It is also an effective treatment for eyelash dandruff. I would recommend coconut oil not only for woman who want to have longer lashes, but also for those who want they lashes to remain healthy.
Additionally, coconut oil is an excellent choice for individuals with sensitive eyes, because there is no irritation if it gets into the eyes. It rarely happens that some hypersensitive people complain of an allergic reaction.
Coconut oil is lighter than other oils (like castor oil), so it weighs less on your eyelashes. Another reason why it is a great choice – it smells wonderful!
2. Castor Oil
When it comes to hair growth, castor oil5 is the first oil that comes to mind. It is also believed to promote eyelash growth because it contains ricin6 which stimulates blood flow in the roots of your eyelashes, but this part is not scientifically proven (yet).
However, its effectiveness is mostly based on self-reported experiences, as consistent use of castor oil can give the appearance of thicker and fuller lashes.
It is often used in hair products, serums and cosmetics. Castor oil is highly nourishing and hydrating, which makes it very valuable for lash care.
It is recommended to use castor oil before bedtime as it will allow more time for the oil to work and stimulate hair growth.
Be careful and avoid getting castor oil into your eyes, as this could cause severe irritation, resulting in redness and intense pain.
A NOTE ON CASTOR OIL: It is rich in ricin and it can be dangerous when in direct contact with the eye. So, it is better to dilute it with other oils and use it with caution.
3. Argan Oil
This oil, extracted from Moroccan argan tree, contains antioxidants, fatty acids, and vitamin E that moisturize eyelashes, promoting their health and beauty.
Using it regularly can not just help with conditioning eyelashes but will also make them longer and thicker.
It is best to apply argan oil on your lashes before going to bed to allow time for it to start working.
Be cautious not to use too much argan oil, as it can cause a stinging sensation on your eyelids. Remember to rinse the oil off in the morning.
If you’re allergic to nuts, try testing this product on the skin behind your ear or on the side of your neck.
Using a high quality argan oil is important in minimizing the likelihood of side effects.
It is better to spend more on a pure and good-quality oil, instead of paying less for one that may cause unwanted results.
4. Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is extracted from almond kernels and is a natural source of monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, magnesium, calcium and other nutrients that stimulate the eyelash growth.
Applied to your lashes, sweet almond oil makes them stronger and less prone to damage or breakage.
Make sure to check the expiration date and avoid using old oil.
After wiping the oil from your lashes with a cotton pad, there’s no need to rinse with water. It’s better to avoid water contact since the mixture of oil and water may clog your pores.
Keep in mind that allergy to almonds is quite popular. So, before using almond oil, test it on the side of your neck to check for any allergic reactions.
If you see red spots or feel itching, the oil may not be suitable for you. Allergic reactions may occur within minutes or up to 24 hours.
5. Lavender Oil
According to a 2016 study7, lavender oil has been proven to promote thicker and faster hair growth. This implies that it may have similar effects on lash growth.
It can also fight bacteria and fungus that may inhibit the lash growth or lead to lash loss.
Before using lavender oil, it is necessary to dilute it with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or jojoba oil. Never ever use pure lavender oil8 on your eyelashes.
6. Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil is the ideal oil to use. Regularly applying it to your lashes can make them stronger and healthier.
It also moisturizes the skin and may help prevent wrinkles around the eyes. Plus, it can be used as a makeup remover. And the best part is that you can find it in your kitchen!
Results won’t happen over night, so be patient and use the oil regularly. You’ll start seeing the benefits within a month or so if you stick with it.
7. Vitamin E Oil
This product is the “holy grail” for beauty bloggers and celebrities. Regular use of vitamin E oil can give you thicker, longer and luscious eyelashes.
You can use it 3-4 times a week to help the lashes grow. Mix natural vitamin E oil with castor oil or coconut oil, and apply it to your lash base.
Vitamin E oil stops hair from breaking, and the same applies to lashes – making your eyelashes thick and voluminous.
Since there is less hair breakage9, lash growth is encouraged. Because of its antioxidative effects, it delays eyelash loss.
It has protective properties against UV rays as well.

Which Oils Are Not Recommended For Eyelashes?
Any oil can be harmful if it gets into the tear film that coats the eyes. After getting into your eye, it can cause irritation, redness, burning sensation and pain.
However, some natural oils can be more dangerous than others, including:
1. Lemon And Orange Oils
Due to their acidic properties they are not good for eye use. The main side effect of using citrus oils is that they cause photosensitivity.
It means that if you use lemon oil in your skin or near the eye, you may experience burning, redness and irritation, because the sunlight triggers immune system reaction.
2. Peppermint Oil
It may cause irritation to the eyes and could potentially lead to severe inflammatory response that may require treatment.
